Complete Skills Data File. The info or data you need for every skill briefing in the IDC , both in Confined Water or Open Water are included in a this very big Excel File (Years of Work with Liam O). In the Sample briefing below, the red italicized parts are from this File. YOU ONLY add the black parts!!! And of course remember using keywords, as you cannot write everything on your slate.
SKILL
Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (CESA)
CONFINED WATER DIVE (CWD) BRIEFING
Intro self, DM and Skill (with signal)
Objective. From Cue Card or Instructor Manual. " Simulate a controlled emergency ......."
Value. In the unlikely event (ITUE) , U run out of air. U are shallow, 12 metres
or less. The surface is nearer than your buddy. Use CESA to ascend safely to surface.
Confined Water Skill Steps. (integrate signals with each step) 1. Get neutral first, then Get into position of ascent – left hand with Inflator, airway open and right hand stretched & pointing forward. 2. Get comfortable by taking some really deep breaths. 3. Swim very slowly to end of line with a low sound and small bubbles.
Other Signals. This is Repeat... Cut.... and Check Air
Organization/ Activity Flow.
After my briefing, descend here. Kneel in front of me. Right Hand Hook Up . I
demo skill. DM send to me 1 student at a time. Get neutrally buoyant (NB). Perform the skill. All done, we ascend. (DM may get students NB during 1st student performance thus saving time and getting credit for using DM).
CESA Teaching Tips.
1. Common problem is diver cannot exhale for 30 secs making a sound.
Diver must practice deep breathing techniques - complete exhalation and deep inhalation using diaphragm breathing instead of using the chest before swim.
2. Divers make small sound / blow small bubbles. Practice first on land or standing in shallow water.
3. Ensure good diver Trim by checking weights and weights positioning.
4. Practice CESA on surface before doing underwater.
CESA in CWD Conduct Tips.
1. When conducting the skill, after stopping, diver MUST redo exercise from start point or end point (whichever is nearer).
2. Should have a 9 meter line. To score for Control / Delivery / Organization
OPEN WATER DIVE (OWD) BRIEFING.
Intro self DM and Skill (with skill signal) as for CWD
Objective. From OWD Flexible Skills. Different from CWD. ("Perform a CESA ......)
Value. Same as for CWD.
Open Water Review. (Exception from other skills. A more detailed briefing is required instead of just reviewing some important points. You must brief on 7 points (RWLASNO +ascent position)
" Remember the following: Regulator retain, Weights retain, Line is for me, Ascent very slowly - not faster than 18 m per minute, Make a small sound all the way, Resume normal breathing if ex stopped, Orally inflate BCD at surface. Remember the ascend position ? - left hand on BCD hose, Airway open and right hand over your head. Get NB before u move.
Environmental Awareness (EA). Watch where you land each time you descend. Get NB before swimming to me. Do not drop weights at the surface, orally inflate your BCD only
Signals. Already integrated. (NO general signals required)
Open Water Organization. Get ready. Follow me to the descent line. We descend. Stop about 2 meters from bottom to check for a suitable spot to land (EA). At bottom, lined up as usual. DM get all NB. DM send 1 by 1 to me. Perform the CESA to surface. I ascend ( holding you and LINE) and descend with each of you. All done, we go to the next skill.
Problems / Effects / Solutions ( may apply to both confined and open water).
1. Not neutral. Therefore difficult or fast ascent. Get NB first.
2. Drop Reg. Reg in mouth In real life may give you another breath. If we stop for any reason, you need to breathe uw. Suggest you retain Reg in mouth all the way.
3. Drop Weights. You will be too buoyant. May have too fast ascent. Keep your weights on to maintain NB.
4. Drop BCD hose. IN real life, you may need to adjust your buoyancy as you ascend, you also need to inflate your BCD orally at the surface. Keep in left hand for ease of doing so.
5. Swam too fast. Bad scuba practice. May exceed max ascend rate allowed. Suggest you ascend slowly. If you need to reach the surface before you run out of breath, learn to relax like a free diver, take some breaths to get comfortable before you start, do not make too loud a sound or blow big bubbles.
6. No sound. Does not meet requirement. A sound indicates you are exhaling. No sound may mean you are not exhaling and maybe holding ur breath. Make a small sound with airway open to ensure you ascend safely.
7. No bubbles. Bubbles and sound indicate you are exhaling and not holding your breath. Dangerous if you are not doing so. Suggest you remember to make a small sound all the way which atomically makes bubbles come out of your mouth.
8. Took another breath. Does not meet requirement. In real life you may not have another breath. Practice and Learn to swim at least 9 meters by relaxing, getting comfortable before start, and making a small sound all the way.
9. Not swimming 9 meters. Does not meet requirement. In real life you may have to do this. If the reason you did not swim 9 meters is because you run out of breath, learn to relax and get comfortable before you start. Make only a small sound.
10. Airway not open. Not safe as air may not be released easily from your lungs. You are also not seeing where you are going. Look up so opening airway the same time.
11. Start in front of start point. Will not swim 9 meters at end of line. Check start point.
